SQUAD 21

For many veterans, returning to civilian life can feel isolating. The loss of daily camaraderie, shared purpose, and structure from military service often leaves veterans without the social networks that once provided strength and support. This isolation can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and even suicide.

Social connection is a lifeline. Meaningful relationships with family, peers, and community help veterans navigate the challenges of reintegration, improve mental health, and build resilience. Whether through peer support groups, community events, or family-centered programs, opportunities to connect reduce feelings of isolation and foster a renewed sense of belonging.

This is why we created Squad 21, a military recognition program that invites active & veteran service members to attend New York Islanders home games free of charge, and connect over their service and shared love of hockey.

Investing in social connection is investing in veterans’ well-being. When veterans are supported by strong, caring networks, they are more likely to thrive, contribute to their communities, and live fulfilling lives after service.
